Canal City Kids

It looks like I’ll still be posting Japan photos for awhile. Today I’ve got two pictures of a pair of cute kids out at the mall.

I took these during a stop we made at Canal City Hakata—the megamall in Fukuoka City—on May 28, 2005, after we had spent the day showing Amy and April around Dazaifu.

This looks more like a wet floor than a fountain. What makes it a fountain is a number of rows of holes drilled into the black stones, from which there are sequential and/or synchronized small bursts of water. The kids are either trying to step on the holes or chase the water drops.

The kids are really cute, but I’m not convinced that training them into stereotypical gender roles from such a young age is a good idea. Here they are from the back:

I like the fact that even though they’re in their Sunday best, they have no qualms about playing in the water.
