The Kirifuri Falls north of Nikko may not be among the most famous waterfalls in Japan but they’re still impressive. After having encountered package tourists at most of the sights in Nikko, I wanted to go somewhere where I could avoid the crowds. As a result, I went to these falls instead of the more famous Kegon Falls.
Also, the bus schedule out to the Kegon Falls didn’t work for me but the Kirifuri Falls, being about 4km from our hotel, were within hiking distance. Of course, it doesn’t say anywhere on the English maps that the hike is uphill all the way. Or that it’s a winding road with very little room for pedestrians. But luckily the traffic was light.
This photo is of the lower stage falls. I’d guess that they’re about twenty feet tall.
