Flight is a new series of sixteen digital images that I am exhibiting for the first time at Mysteria Gallery in Regina from July 8 to September 5, 2009 as part of my solo exhibition Crossroads and Flight.

The series started as a handful of sketches I made in early 2007. In November 2008 I scanned the sketches, and then started to redraw, edit, and revise them digitally. I did a large chunk of work developing the pieces at the Winter Colony of the Saskatchewan Writers and Artists Colonies, at St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster in February 2009. I finished the pieces in June 2009.

Although the overall title of the series was inspired by the constant presence of winged creatures in the drawings, the title is often meant metaphorically. The pieces explore crowds and groups, changes, evolution, and states of being. The images not only present beings in flight, they also show some of the configurations in which people gather and flock, come together, and separate.

The colour palette and drawing style is an extension of my work on Husk, a chapbook I created in collaboration with Lia Pas. Husk presented a poem about transformation, and was designed in such a way that the images were completely integrated with the text.
